Letter to the Voters of Sarasota County
Dear Sarasota County Voter
On Friday, October 19th I filed paperwork to run
as a Democratic candidate for the Office of
Supervisor of Elections. This is a decision that
I have been considering for some time. My
interest began with issues that arose with the
2000 presidential election and was fueled by the
under-vote controversy here in Sarasota County
in the 2006 elections. As both a 19 year member
of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and a
voting citizen, I am concerned about the loss of
confidence in our election process. Each of us
has a right and responsibility to participate in
the electoral process and when situations arise
that call into question the integrity of that
process it can only have a negative impact. It
is my interest in restoring confidence and trust
in our local elections office that has brought
me to this decision.
Obviously, I am new to the political arena and
this will be a learning journey. I will be
attempting to contact as many people as possible
during the next several months and would
appreciate any contacts you might be able to
suggest. I will need to talk to any and all
groups that will give me time on their agendas.
As you also know, running a campaign takes money
and I will need financial support. I want to be
sure that you recognize that I will be running
as a Democratic candidate; however it is not my
wish to try to change anyone’s political
affiliation. I would only ask that you consider
my qualifications and make your decision with
your vote on November 4th, 2008.
The coming year will be hectic, exciting,
tiring, filled with new faces and experiences. I
look forward to the challenge of participating
in the campaign process. I appreciate the
encouragement that I have received thus far and
hope that you will also support me in my
decision. Elect Barry Sullivan Supervisor of
Elections….your vote WILL count!!
All the best,
Barry
